FamilyBoost Changes Now in Law – What Families Need to Know

If your family receives FamilyBoost support to help with early childhood education (ECE) costs, there’s good news — the Government’s changes announced in July have now officially become law.
From the July–September 2025 quarter, new rules apply, and families can start claiming under the updated settings from 1 October 2025.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s changed:
1. Higher income threshold
The household income threshold has been lifted to $57,286 per quarter.
This means more families may now qualify for FamilyBoost support.
2. Increased maximum claim amount
Eligible families can now claim 40% of their early childhood education (ECE) costs, up to a maximum of $1,560 per quarter.
That’s a healthy boost to help with the rising cost of childcare.
3. Updated abatement rate
The abatement rate — the rate at which FamilyBoost reduces as income increases — has been adjusted to 7% for household income over $35,000 per quarter.
These updates are designed to ease the cost of ECE for families across Aotearoa, helping more parents balance work and family life.
